Chess Revamped Rules
Chess Revamped is a chess variant that keeps the familiar board and pieces, but changes the movement of the royal piece, the queen, and the pawns.
Goal of the Game
The goal is to checkmate the opponent’s king. The king is still the royal piece. It cannot be captured directly. The game ends when the king is in check and has no legal move to escape.
King
The king moves like the old queen. It can move any number of squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, as long as the path is clear.
Even though the king is more powerful in this variant, it is still vulnerable. It cannot move into check, and if it is checkmated, the game is over.
Queen
The queen moves like the old king. It can move one square in any direction. Because of this, the queen is less valuable than in traditional chess.
Pawns
Pawns move one square forward only. There is no two-square opening pawn move.
Pawns can capture one square diagonally forward, like normal chess. In Chess Revamped, pawns can also capture one square directly forward.
Removed Rules
- Castling is removed.
- En passant is removed.
- Pawns do not have a two-square first move.
Promotion
When a pawn reaches the final rank, it can promote to a rook, bishop, knight, or queen. Since the queen is weaker in Chess Revamped, promotion to rook is often the strongest choice.
